Verzuz was first introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic as a virtual DJ battle. Creatives Timbaland and SwizzBeatz were the first to face off in its first iteration through an Instagram Live broadcast in March 2020. Since then, many other artists have taken part in this virtual music battle, with 111.7 million viewers tuning in for the infamous DMX and Snoop Dogg battle. Most of the artists who have taken part in this lockdown phenomenon have had a huge increase in fans streaming their music after their performances. This is largely due not only to live listeners based on services like 'Instagram Live', but also to various music services like Spotify, Apple Music and TIDAL.

These platforms often play back the playlist from the battles for a longer period of time. In a Variety interview after her battle with Erykah Badu, Jill Scott claimed that her catalog jumped over 300 percent the morning after their Verzuz showdown.

Despite the reopening of outdoor venues, virtual experiences are allowing artists to make money during a time when venue shutdowns have halted their income streams. The 'Verzuz' battles have allowed artists to make fans re-evaluate all the ways they want to experience music in the future.

Fans can reminisce and be up close and personal with their favorites. Whether it's behind the scenes footage or their favorite song being blasted for all to see, 'Verzuz' allows fans to see their favorite artists explore their creativity and take part in a fun and healthy competition, often reliving childhood memories.
